Among other issues on the agenda for their meeting in Tirana, lawmakers will discuss security in the Western Balkans, and celebrate Montenegro’s invitation to become the 29th member of NATO, it was published at the website of the NATO PA.
It adds that the prime ministers of Montenegro and Albania, Milo Djukanovic and Edi Rama will both address the Assembly just days after Allied Foreign Ministers signed the accession protocol with Montenegro at their meeting in Brussels.
The spring session of the NATO PA, hosted for the first time by the Albanian Parliament, will be focused on the agenda of the summit which is to be held in Warsaw on 8 and 9 July.
Lawmakers will, as announced, consider how the alliance is to respond to the challenges faced by the allies, including among other things from Russia, terrorism, the conflicts in Iraq and Syria, mass migrations, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
Deputy Secretary General of NATO Alexander Vershbow will inform the MPs on the summit agenda, and the Assembly should support the declaration titled “United and determined agenda for the NATO summit in Warsaw”.
Commenting particularly complex security environment, on the occasion of the summit, the chairman of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and US Congressman Michael Turner said that “the challenges we face today will not disappear anytime soon”.
“We are in this for the long haul. So all of us must reinvest in our defence”, said Turner, according to the website of the NATO PA.
The NATO PA Spring Session, which has started on Friday in Tirana, brings together more than 250 delegates over four days. The Assembly unites members of national parliaments from the 28 Allied nations as well as partner countries, observers and organisations.
