Montenegrins returned over a thousand weapons

Speaking at a press conference to close the campaign “Respect Life, Return Weapons”, Minister said that each recovered pistol or rifle prevented at least one potential tragedy.

“Owning a weapon does not guarantee personal safety”, Danilovic said, inviting citizens who still possess illegal weapons to take advantage of the legal possibilities and return them through a simple procedure.

He called on those with expired firearm licenses to extend them, so as to not bear criminal sanctions.

Head of UNDP in Montenegro, Fiona McCluney, said that the number of collected weapons confirms that citizens are increasingly aware of the dangers of illegal possession.

“Through safe and environmentally harmless destruction of weapons, we contribute to sustainable human development”, stated McCluney.

Head of OSCE Mission to Montenegro, Janina Hrebickova, believes that guns remain a primary tool used in the crime.

Ambassador of Germany in Podgorica, Gudrun Steinacker, said that although the tradition of owning a gun is strong in both Montenegro and Germany, we must be ultimately responsible when dealing with weapons.

Director of CDT, Dragan Koprivica, said the campaign helped inform citizens about the new legislation, collect weapons and contributed to a safer society.
