In his opening speech, Pazin thanked for the opportunity to discuss the rule of law and human rights and freedoms in an open discussion, pointing out that these values reflect a common European identity, which also represent important guidelines for the Montenegro’s path towards the European Union and NATO.
Emphasising the importance of the reform of the judiciary and its contribution to the rule of law, Pazin presented the results that Montenegro achieved in the previous period, particularly pointing to the results in terms of strengthening the independence and impartiality of the judiciary.
Highlighting the widespread consensus for full membership of Montenegro in the European Union, Pazin informed the journalists about the amendments to the Constitution adopted in 2013 and a set of key laws in the area of justice.
The minister also emphasised that the negative phenomenon of corruption might jeopardise all the state’s efforts to set up a stable social framework, which is why Montenegro is intensively working on strengthening the institutional framework, aimed at successful law enforcement.
In this regard, the journalists have been presented institutional structure – forming the Special State Prosecutor’s Office and the Anti-Corruption Agency, as well as the system of seizing assets gained through criminal activities.
Pazin particularly thanked Ambassador Mitja Drobnic, Head of the EU Delegation to Montenegro, and associates, for efficient and principled cooperation and the support that Montenegrin institutions received in the previous period.
The journalists have been interested in a number of topics including the foreign policy aspects of the EU functioning, negotiation process with Montenegro, migrant crisis as a global challenge, the issue of resolving the status of displaced persons, public perception of widespread corruption and the fight against economic crime.
