PHOTO: Campaign “Let’s stop online violence”: Half of the children is not safe!

New campaign of the government of Montenegro and UNICEF against children violence will focus on internet violence in its first phase until the end of this year, in accordance with the global UNICEF’s campaign “Let’s stop online violence”.

Research done in May and June showed that younger generations in Montenegro start with using internet earlier than older children, and that they mostly use internet for fun and socializing, and the least for schoolwork, and that most of them go through some form of peer violence.

Every second child said that they don’t feel safe on the internet and that they don’t use internet in school, and most of them say that they know more about internet than their parents.

Chief of UNICEF in Montenegro Benjamin Perks said that 91 percent of children between 9 and 17 in Montenegro are using internet, out of which 87 percent is using it every day.

As he said, 72 percent of children have profile on a social network, while many of them give away their persnal data over the internet easily.

Parents could contribute significantly to their kids safety on the internet, but the problem is that many of them don’t know enough about internet to help their children. “Every fifth parent never used internet. Only 39 percent of parents and children say that children talk to parents when something disturbing happens on the internet”.

Director of Ipsos research Svetlana Logar said during the presentation of results that children between 15 and 17 years of age are on average around 4 hours per day on internet.

Logar said that 20 percent of parents don’t use internet at all, and that digital skills of parents fall more an more behind children’s as children grow up.

She said that children are not much aware of the risks that exist on internet.

Research showed that parental protection and support to children comes down to very little activities, and that at this moment, school has very little role in channeling children’s use of internet.

Awareness of the internet risks is increasing with age, and biggest awareness is among kids living in southern region and those with middle socio-economic status.
