Mayor of Cetinje, Aleksandar Bogdanovic, announced that the building of the Russian Embassy, which was destroyed by fire three years ago, will be reconstructed to be energy efficiency.

“I believe it is not necessary to elaborate on the architectural significance of the building, which will be another energy-efficient building in our city. More importantly, after a century, it will bring the Ministry of Foreign Affairs back in Cetinje… It is also a herald of a series of activities marking the 13th of November – Liberation Day of Cetinje – during which we will have events to announce new investments in our city, as well as opening of a new apartment building for our citizens”, said Bogdanovic.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Igor Lukšić, expressed his satisfaction that this project will make Cetinje the center of national diplomacy once again.

“… I am sure this residence will fully serve its true purpose and I am looking forward to it. This project is especially important because it symbolizes the fundamental cooperation of the Government of Montenegro and the old royal capital, and I am also pleased that the UNDP is part of it, through the program Beautiful Cetinje. And because we had such great experience with it, next year we will expand it to other municipalities of Montenegro, through the project Beautiful Montenegro”, Luksic said.

UNDP Resident Representative in Montenegro, Fiona McCluney, stressed she is glad because Beautiful Cetinje was continued through renewal of the former Russian Embassy. She added a lot of time was invested to prepare a project that meets all the needs and requirements of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noting new measures such as the energy efficiency were additionally introduced.

“… and I am looking forward to coming to Cetinje in the future months, to see the progress of works”, she concluded.

Program Beautiful Cetinje already helped restore buildings of the former British Embassy, old hospital “Danilo the First”, as well as several objects in Njegoševa Street and at the Royal Square.
