Prince Nikola II Petrovic Njegos met with Pope Francis

During the meeting with Pope Francis, both sides stressed the highly valued historical and traditional bonds of friendship and cooperation between Montenegro and the Holy See. The role of the Petrovic dynasty in bringing together the two countries in Christian faith as well as strengthening of the ecumenical dialogue was also noted.

“Prince Nikola particularly stressed the issues of ecology, as well as the current migrant crisis and praised the efforts of Pope Francis in this area”, a statement from the MFA reads.

During the meeting with Secretary of State, Parolin, the interlocutors noted that the Concordat between the Principality of Montenegro and the Holy See, a historical document completed in the time of Prince Nicholas I, is the foundation of today’s successful bilateral cooperation between Montenegro and the Vatican.

At the end of his visit to the Vatican, Prince Nikola II awarded high Vatican officials, representatives of the Italian nobility, as well as diplomats accredited to the Holy See, including the Montenegrin Ambassador Veselin Šuković with the “Medal of the Order of Danilo I of Montenegro”.

The visit was carried through the Embassy of Montenegro to the Holy See.
