Serbian retired General Borislav Djukic arrested at the airport Tivat on Croatian warrant

Djukic, who is a Serbian citizen, was arrested last night when returning to Belgrade. Apart from him, the same Croatian indictment was launched against the General Ratko Mladic, then commander of the 9th Knin’s Corps of the Yugoslav National Army (JNA).

The Police Administration of Montenegro (UP) announced that NCB Interpol Zagreb had issued an international arrest warrant against Djukic in order to provide his presence in the criminal proceedings due to the criminal offense of crimes against humanity committed in the period from August 1991 to the end in 1993 at the territory of the Republic of Croatia.

The police communicated that after hearing in the High Court in Podgorica, the judge ordered Djukic’s extradition detention.

Djukic was the deputy commander of the Army of Serbs’ Krajina, and also a defence witness in the trial against the former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and the President of the Republic of Serbs’ Krajina, Milan Martic.

According to the documentation of “Veritas”, as a Commander of 221st Motorised Brigade of the 9th Knin’s Corps of the JNA, then colonel Djukic, was accused of demolition of the dam “Peruca”.

This indictment also included the General, Ratko Mladic, then commander of the 9th Knin’s Corps of the JNA, the General Mile Novakovic, then commander of the Army of the Serbs’ Krajina and the Major Milan Korica, then commander of the border police units of the Republic of Serbs’ Krajina.

The accused were remanded in custody in 1993, and arrest warrants against them were issued, which are still valid.

According to the Croatian indictment from 1995, the General Ratko Mladic and others were charged with war crimes against civilians committed in January 1993.

According to the indictment, on January 28th 1993 the generals Mladic and Novakovic had ordered Djukic and Korica, who had passed the ordered to their subordinates, to set a large amount of explosives thus preparing the “Peruca” dam for demolition.

They had set about 30 tons of explosives, after which, according to the indictment, the army withdraw from the area activating the explosives.

The dam was damaged and the tower of the dam was destroyed. The damage was estimated at 25.55 million Deutsche Marks.

According to the indictment, the timely intervention of workers of the hydro power plant prevented complete demolition of the dam which would endanger the lives of more than 50,000 inhabitants of the towns of Sinj, Trilj and Omis.
