Sweden: Membership in large alliances is very important for tiny Montenegro

Swedish lawmakers were received by State Secretary Bojan Sarkic.

According to the statement of the Ministry of Defence, the Swedish delegation showed great interest in the process of Montenegro’s Euro-Atlantic integration, including public support for NATO membership, the legislation in the defence field, which had to be aligned with the new standards, the defence ministry’s attitude towards gender equality and the influence of the future membership in the alliance on the overall change in the country.

Sarkic presented all important aspects of the Montenegrin defence system reform, particularly emphasising cooperation with its partners, as well as the importance of the education of new officer corps who are educated in foreign military academies for the Ministry of Defence.

He pointed out the participation of the Montenegrin Armed Forces in international missions and operations, especially in Afghanistan, as an important segment to achieve full interoperability.

The Swedish Delegation included Björn von Sydow, member of the Swedish Parliament and chairman of the country’s delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, MP Joran Peterson and Lizelot Martynenko Agerlid, the Charge d’Affaires of the Swedish Embassy in Belgrade.

The meeting was also attended by non-resident Ambassador of Montenegro to Sweden Miroslav Scepanovic.
