There are not enough chairs for all children who want to learn Greek

Addressing the new generation of students, the Ambassador of Greece to Montenegro Sotirios Athanassiou said that he was glad because so many young people were interested in learning Greek and that the courses were aimed at further improving traditionally friendly relations between Montenegro and Greece.

“I am glad to see so many young people here. It shows that you have great interest in learning the Greek language, as well as in Greece in general”, said Ambassador Athanassiou.

Greek diplomat reminded that all the past 14 years, the Embassy organized a free course of the Greek language in Podgorica, which was attended by about a thousand Montenegrins and 500 of them received a certificate on successful course completion.

“Now we have the generation of students who acquired the language so well that they speak Greek as good as I do. I hope that the new participants will be persistent enough to learn the Greek language well. I want to warn you that this is a difficult language, so you need to make a lot of effort to learn it. I believe you will do so and I wish you success and a happy start”, ambassador Athanassiou said.

Commenting on the reasons for organising free courses for citizens of Montenegro, the ambassador pointed out that the aim was to make Montenegrin and Greek peoples even closer through learning about the history, culture, civilisation…

“Language is the best bridge to unite the people. When organising free courses in Podgorica was launched 14 years ago, the goal was to further improve relations between the two countries in other fields such as politics, economy… Free language courses have made a big contribution. But hadn’t our political ties been so good, the projects such as organising courses could not have a significant impact. However, since the relations between Greece and Montenegro have always been good, learning the Greek language only further contribute to their improvement”, Athanassiou said, adding that the course will be continued in the coming years.

The ambassador thanked the Ministry of Education for good cooperation through all these years and to the Maksim Gorki school, which provided a classroom for the course.

Lack of room

The participants who appeared in the school on Wednesday will be divided into six groups. One classroom was provided for the course, which is insufficient for such a large number of interested students.

The ambassador noted the issue as well.

“I am very pleased with the number of people interested in the course, but also a little scared because of the large number of candidates, and we have unfortunately only one classroom and one teacher available. There will be problems in organising the classes”, the ambassador said.
