Zakharova: Moscow does not contest the election results in Montenegro

She said Moscow hopes that the new authorities will take into account the opinion of almost half of the citizens of Montenegro who supported parties advocating referendum on NATO membership.

Zakharova added the results of Sunday’s elections again “show a deep rift in the Montenegrin society on a whole range of issues, especially on foreign policy and its perspective merger to NATO”.

According to her, the important issue is the report of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), which states that there was “restriction of freedom of opinion in the Montenegrin media, which affected voters’ access to analytical information”.

She also said that Moscow is paying attention to the fact that Montenegrin parties which, according to preliminary data, received 39 seats, are not recognizing election results because of the arrests made under suspicion of a coup.

“We assume that this episode must be investigated thoroughly and transparently”, said Zakharova.
