Ahlund: Ethnic tensions in the Balkans might spark again

Christian Ahlund, member and the former president of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance said that the Balkans is still a very unstable region.

“The biggest threat to the Balkans is the ethnic tension which may spark off again. The best antidote is accession of the WB countries to the EU. However, the problem is that, on that journey, we notice the resistance of both internal and external factors”, says Ahlund.

Ahlund says that Jean-Claude Juncker’s comment that World War III is threatening in case Balkans is taken European perspective is “drastic”.

“I think we should avoid speculating about World War III. It’s not appropriate”, says Ahlund.

He points out that Balkans is still unstable region, faced with many challenges, and many European countries aren’t resistant to Russian influence and one of them is Hungary. He believes that the Balkan countries, including Montenegro, are ready to withstand such pressure, if not alone, then with the help of partners.  Another problem is brain drain.

“Young people should be encouraged to stay in their country, since they are every country’s greatest resource. I would like to see that you’re following the example of the East-European countries, where industry is developed, and young people don’t leave the country”, says Ahlund.
