Air pollution is the biggest ecological threat to the Western Balkans

Six cities in the Western Balkans are among 20 cities with the highest pollution rate in the world, Air pollution is the biggest ecological threat to human health. Cancer and tumors, the most serious health problems in the region, are directly connected to air pollution. This means that the need for giving citizens’ health the priority while considering environment issues is essential, said Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council, Ms Majlinda Bregu.

Ms Bregu is in Belgrade today, on the panel “Picture of the future: Green, more developed Western Balkans”. She said that environment and climate changes were not sustainable in the region.

“Now that the EU is going to deal with the new “green agreement” and in the light of discouraging news coming from the European Council today, the EU should see environment and climate as fundamental questions of the enlargement policy, considering that air pollution has no limits”, said Ms Bregu.

Balkan barometer for 2019, research carried out by the RCC, shows that 84% of the citizens in the region see climate change as huge threat, whereas 10% of respondents believe that pollution is the main problem in their community.

Panel participants tried to define real and often underestimated possibilities in the region concerning economic, social and ecological development of the WB region.
