The European Union, EU, has been captured by policies that promote Islamophobia. Without Turkey and the Balkans, it cannot be a strong player on the world map, Ambassador of Turkey to Montenegro, Ms Songul Ozan, told in an interview for CdM.

She noted that the EU, that is, certain powerful EU member states, do not want to have Turkey as a new member state.

Turkey’s accession negotiations started in 2005 but the negotiation talks are still pending.

Ms Ozan said that relations between the EU and Turkey have been quite delicate. The reason behind this is the fact that the EU itself is not implementing visionary policies.

“The EU has been recently struck by the policy of Islamophobia, fanaticism and nationalism. We can see that nationalist parties fueling Islamophobia are on the rise, i.e. the number of their supporters is increasing, and the European Parliament election proved it,” indicated Ambassador Ozan.

According to her, the EU has been continuously trying to derail Turkey’s accession to the Union.

“They are always putting us aside, but whenever they need us, then we’re good. The EU is not complete without the Balkans and Turkey. Only with Turkey it can be a strong player on the world map. The EU must take Turkey as its member state,” Ms Ozan noted.

She continued: “Multiculturalism and multi-ethnicity represent the values of our age, and everyone, including the EU, should understand it.”
