The ban on extracting gravel from Montenegrin rivers has came into force in April this year. Its introduction has proved to be absolutely justified and revealed the extent of devastation of river beds, best visible when rivers are low, Pobjeda writes.

Most of the river flows in Montenegro have been completely changed, which is the result of irrational exploitation, flood, drainage, erosion and sparse vegetation.

This is what the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s coordination team for monitoring the implementation of the ban established. The team involves representatives of the ministry, the Water Directorate, the Police Directorate, the Inspection Directorate and local self-governance.

The most endangered rivers are Lim and Grncar. The recovery project for these two rivers is €470,000 worth. It will be financed by the World Bank. The project will also be supported by the Global Environment Facility and the Special Climate Change Fund.

The technical documents necessary for the project implementation shall be drafted by the end of 2018.
