Bečić – Maddocks: Nobody will be above the law

We must all rise above personal and party interests, because Montenegro and interest of our citizens must be our priority, said Mr Aleksa Bečić, president of the Parliament of Montenegro, during today’s meeting with British Ambassador to Montenegro, Ms Karen Maddocks.

Mr Bečić was happy that one of his first official meetings was with the representative of the United Kingdom.

“The agreement constituents of the new government have signed clearly shows that Montenegro will remain on its foreign policy course, that there won’t be any revanchism, only respect for the rule of law. No individual will be above law”, Mr Bečić pointed out.

Speaking about priorities of the new parliament, Mr Bečić said that he would work on strengthening legislative, supervision and control role. He stressed that he would be committed to restoring dignity to this house and replacing intolerance with respect and open dialogue.

He said the new parliament would improve harmonization of national legislation with the European.

Mr Bečić thanked the ambassador for the support of the British embassy for the institutional reinforcement of the Parliament of Montenegro and added that he was certain that Parliamentary budget office would soon experience its full capacity.

Ambassador Maddocks congratulated Mr Bečić on his appointment.

“We believe the Parliament plays decisive role in the effectiveness of functional democracy and your contribution is of paramount importance. We are very glad that we share objectives in the area of defense, fight against corruption and organized crime and deepening parliamentary cooperation. British Government and Parliament are willing to help you”, she said.
