Brajović: Montenegro’s richness reflects in solidarity, dialogue and respect for differences

President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Mr Ivan Brajović, delivered an address during General Debate of the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU), which is taking place in Belgrade today. The subject of the General debate is: “Strengthening international law: Parliamentary roles and mechanism and the contribution to regional cooperation”.

In his address, Mr Brajović pointed out that the path our country had taken ever since it renewed its independence was based on the values of solidarity, dialogue and respect for differences, making the greatest richness of civil, multi-ethnic and multi-confessional Montenegro.

“Through my regular parliamentary work and more intense communication with the citizens, Parliament of Montenegro takes active part in strengthening democratic processes and creating better political and social and economic environment. We have been declared most open parliament in the region”, stressed Mr Brajović.

He said that strengthening parliament’s role led to strengthening the voice and will of our citizens in international relations.

“As body elected to represent all structures of the society, parliament assumes a unique responsibility for harmonizing interests and expectations in new circumstances using dialogue and compromise, controlling activities of governments and international organizations and making its contribution to tackling challenges at the international stage”, Mr Brajović pointed out.

He added that talks held during such gatherings showed that challenges that lay ahead were regional and international rather than national and that opportunities for finding adequate solutions shouldn’t be missed.

“Our duty is to support each other and to try to be united in good intentions and desire for safe and prosperous life of our citizens. Montenegro knows that EU membership of all countries of Southeast Europe is the safest way to achieve social, economic and political goals”, said Mr Brajović.

Mr Brajović met with the president of IPU, Ms Gabriela Kuevas Baron. They both agreed that presence of over 150 delegations from every continent was a great opportunity to widen and strengthen parliamentary cooperation and overall relations among members.

Ms Baron pointed out that IPU would endeavor to cooperate more with parliaments, particularly in the field of strengthening institutions, promoting gender equality and encouraging youth.

Mr Brajović also met with the president of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, Mr Dejan Židanomuz. They stated that Montenegro and Slovenia were characterized by joint history, friendship between two nations and the fact that there were no open questions in bilateral relations.

Mr Brajović took this opportunity to meet president of the Parliament of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Mr Slimane Chenine. They talked about the possibilities for developing parliamentary and other forms of cooperation.
