Brajovic: Our statehood is based on anti-fascism values

The task of all those who play a responsible role in the society is to promote the values of anti-fascism, such as solidarity among groups and individuals, social justice, respect for diversity and equality, said the Parliament Speaker Ivan Brajovic at the panel “What is fascism in Montenegro today” held in the Parliament, on the occasion of 9 May – the Victory Day and Europe Day.

“Montenegro has much to be proud of, both in historical context, as well as today. Uprising in Montenegro, as well as the nationwide uprising in occupied Europe, is one of the brightest moments in our history. Today we are rightfully proud of our inter-ethnic and religious harmony, tolerance and understanding of diversity as basic anti-fascist values that have been nurtured and developed over decades. For an independent, European Montenegro has been created precisely on the foundations of the anti-fascist struggle,” said Brajovic.

According to him, modern Europe to which we aspire is predominantly grounded on those values.

Brajovic said that fostering culture of remembrance was particularly important, because “fascism as unprecedented negative phenomenon is not disappearing”. The role of institutions and individuals is to defend proven and achieved values on which a modern society is being developed.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Parliament Speaker as the head of the state delegation laid a wreath at the monument to Partisan Fighter on the Gorica hill.

The panel was also attended by historian Zivko Andrijasevic, vice rector and professor at the University of Montenegro; expert in politics Ilija Vujacic, professor at the Belgrade-based Faculty of Political Science and Podgorica-based University of Donja Gorica; Jadranka Selhanovic, assistant director of the State Archives of Montenegro; Slavko Burzanovic, representative of the Historical Institute of Montenegro and Adnan Prekic, representative of the Faculty of Philosophy in Niksic. The guests were welcomed by the academic Zuvdija Hodzic, president of SUBNOR and antifascists of Montenegro. The panel moderator was MP Dragutin Papovic, a historian.
