Caves on Trnovo – Pearl of Montenegrin craggy terrain

Speleological group DDISKF from Zagreb (Dinaridi Association for research and recording of karst phenomena) and the mountaineering club “Visokogorci” from Podgorica have designed an interesting project whose objective is to present the underground world of rugged land in Crmnica to nature lovers, tourists and to scientific community. To be more precise, this project focuses on the cave system in the village Trnovo.

According to the founder of this team, Tihomir Tiho Kovačević, an expert from Zagreb but originally from our country, the idea is to unite three caves and present them as phenomenon of the ethno village Trnovo which kept the traditional characteristics of a Montenegrin village.

“That way we would have a story which would reflect the harmonization of the man living here and the nature which provided him life and existence in this unique craggy terrain”, says Kovačević.

He said that after visiting our country for the first time, he felt like he had to make something valuable for his homeland.

“The moment I saw this area I thought it should be put in a necklace, connecting two national parks, two pearls – Skadar Lake and Lovćen. After all, I think that entire Montenegro can be a national park. People living in that national park should take care of it and tell stories from the past to the visitors, offer them quality food and provide safe and peaceful stay”, says Kovačević.

First and foremost, access paths to the caves should be made.

“Old houses should be restored and renew those which are demolished. Citizens should be allowed to actively engage in the project, especially through farmers’ households, which will have a lot to offer”, says Kovačević.

But, for the idea to be implemented a lot of time is necessary, as Kovačević says, nothing is easy.
