Celebrations of Podgorica Assembly intend to deny country’s achievements

Certain structures in Montenegro never cease to provoke and create divisions, especially with holding celebrations to mark 100 years since the Podgorica Assembly took place. The main celebration of the Podgorica Assembly is supposed to be organized on 1 December in the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, Podgorica.

CdM interlocutors claim any celebration of the day when Montenegro lost its sovereignty should be a strong warning for Montenegro citizens.

Miloš Nikolić of the Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, told CdM people who celebrated negation and non-existence of Montenegro were the same ones who hadn’t desired Montenegro to be an independent state in the referendum, and they themselves would destroy everything Montenegro has achieved so far, as an independent and sovereign state in case of staying in power.

On the idea of prohibiting such kind of gatherings, Nikolić was clear: “In order to prevent such gatherings and behaviour, we must work harder on the society emancipation.”

Boris Raonić of the Civic Alliance told CdM that in serious countries, such exotic events are not perceived as serious gatherings, whereas in Montenegro, unfortunately, this has been the main political topic.

“This situation corresponds to both, the ruling coalition and opposition, as they can struggle over the identity issues, while all the significant matters for Montenegro citizens, such as negotiation talks in Chapters 23 and 24 have been neglected,” emphasized he.

The main celebration of the Podgorica Assembly was announced after celebrations in several Montenegrin towns were held. Even though the state leadership had claimed the celebrations were going to be banned, that never happened.
