Darmanovic–Kurz: NATO membership for reinforcing stability of the region

Upcoming Montenegro’s membership in NATO will contribute to the strengthening of stability in the region, said foreign minister Srdjan Darmanovic during the meeting with his Austian counterpart Sebastian Kurz.

Darmanovic thanked for the support that Austria provides to Montenegro on its path towards European integration, both at work and at expert levels.

“He emphasised the full commitment of Montenegro to the implementation of the necessary reforms at the national level with the expectation that each country will be assessed on its own merits and progress. He pointed out that the upcoming Montenegrin membership in NATO would contribute to strengthening stability in the region,” the ministry said in the statement.

Kurz reiterated strong support for the European perspective of Montenegro and emphasised that the Western Balkans was among top foreign policy priorities of Austria.

“The commitment of Austrian foreign policy to the Western Balkans is the result of a long tradition of historical ties but also economic orientation towards the region,” he said.

Ministers agreed that the quality of bilateral relations was confirmed by meaningful cooperation in the field of defence, economy, culture, tourism and environmental protection.
