Department for Diaspora aims to serve emigrants from Montenegro

Even though it can often be heard that outside Montenegro, in diaspora, there’s a whole another Montenegro, it’s extremely hard to say about the precise number of emigrants from our country. Figures are just one of the aspects and it’s far more important to create conditions for something of a better quality and more meaningful content for the Montenegrin emigrants, Mr Predrag Mitrović, head of the Department for Diaspora, told Pobjeda daily.

According to him, it’s almost impossible to know precise number of our diaspora and there are many reasons for that – non-existence of mechanisms for the enumeration of all generations living abroad, the fact that our diaspora is multinational, which additionally makes their monitoring difficult.

Mr Mitrović said: “In the public discourse, we often hear about estimates that there’s a whole another Montenegro in our diaspora, which can be true especially if we take into account all generations of our diaspora. In order to reach such estimates about the number of our diaspora, it is necessary to combine multiple sources, i.e. the Montenegro census, the census in the receiving countries, the records kept by a specialized institution in the receiving country, as well as the estimates of our people and our diplomatic and consular missions about the possible number of our diaspora in a certain country. Therefore, it’s always important to emphasize that these are unofficial estimates.”
