Đukanović: Religious issue must be settled without further divisions

President of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), Mr Milo Đukanović, said at the Conference held in Podgorica that his party’s main task was to overcome resistance at the domestic stage which prevented Montenegro from developing into a stable country and multi-ethnic society. He pointed out that the religious issue had to be settled without further divisions.

“We are facing resistance of those who are actually trying to take us back to beginning. They are trying to undermine our religious identity, our cultural identity which will finally lead to that despicable question that has been permeating our history: “Why would a nation without national, cultural and religious identity need a state? Why would nations of the same cultural and religious identity live in two separate countries?”, said Mr Đukanović.

He said that their intention wasn’t to make further divisions in Montenegro, or to try to take revenge for the injustice Montenegrin people had suffered.

“Shortly, we don’t think we should form Montenegrin Orthodox Church that wouldn’t let Serbs  in. We are doing this in order to strengthen the stability of the country which is, unfortunately, being threatened by Serbian Orthodox Church. We want to overcome divisions since they have become our curse”, said Mr Đukanović,

We can do that only if we have united people.

“We want to overcome historical divisions, we want reconciliation. We want that done in European way, guided by the idea of further improvement of democracy and freedom, religious freedoms especially. We want to expand that freedom and create conditions for the people to enjoy them fully. Our guiding idea  is correct and historically based”, said Mr Đukanović.

In his address, he spoke about his party’s activities and pointed out that in the past four years his party had done a lot in the Capital.

“We’ve achieved every objective had set. We’re proud of that. As governing party, we are constantly faced with many challenges, but we have improved our rating. However, we must pursue our political life with utmost responsibility and keep communicating with people, explaining what we are doing”, said Mr Đukanović.

Mr Đukanović underlined that DPS policy had contributed to the transformation of Podgorica.

“Today Podgorica is the result of serious and continuous work of our party. Podgorica offers possibilities for high-quality life”, said the leader of DPS.
