Everybody expects a lot from Montenegro, as it is stability factor

Stability of Western Balkans would be good news, regulation of relations between Serbia and Kosovo even better, but keeping the dynamics of the accession process would be the best possible news from Berlin today, said Momčilo Radulović, from the European Movement. Dragan Đukanović, analyst from Belgrade, thinks that everybody expects a lot from Montenegro, since it’s the stability factor in the Balkans.

Berlin is hosting the meeting over the Western Balkans today. President of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović, was invited to attend.

As it has been announced, political situation in the region and the progress that has been made so far in normalizing relations between Serbia and Kosovo will be the main subject of the meeting.

In 2014, Germany and France initiated the so called Berlin process. The objective was stabilization of safety and improvement of political and economic relations among WB countries. Many successful events unfolded. Three interstate agreements have been reached – two agreements on the regulation of border disputes between Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro and Kosovo. The third agreement is the agreement on the Macedonia-Greek dispute over the name, and that is probably the greatest success of the Berlin process. Dispute between Serbia and Kosovo is open, and it will be in the focus of today’s talks in Berlin.

According to Radulović, European officials are putting efforts into resolving problems in the region. He sees the meeting in Germany as the last attempt to send a good message from the Balkans.

Regulation of open relations wouldn’t be beneficial for the Balkans only, but also for the EU. Radulović and Đukanović agree Montenegro, as stability factor, can be helpful.

“The important thing is that the meeting has regional format, and Montenegro, which cherishes good relations with the neighbors, has full capacity to contribute to the favorable development of relations in the region and to accelerated normalization of relations between Belgrade and Priština”, said Dragan Đukanović.

“Although Montenegro isn’t in the focus of the problem, it’s there, and that’s a compliment. The authority that our President Milo Đukanović is exercising, and Montenegro as mediator in the Balkans – that’s what it’s expected from Montenegro”, said Mr Radulović.

Montenegro is enjoying the status of stability factor thanks to promotion of dialogue and tolerance. Besides, it’s NATO member and is successfully negotiating on entering the EU.
