Fajon: I don’t want to want to wake up in far-right Europe

The enlargement represents one of the most successful EU policies and that’s what distinguishes us from other powerful unions, Tanja Fajon, member of the European Parliament, tells in an interview with Pobjeda daily.

The problem is, she says, that the EU citizens are not aware of the advantages the enlargement brings as they usually see only dangers, while politicians only want to be re-elected and deny policies that have favorable consequences in a long run.

She also says dealing with the region has been a great challenge for her but also a serious responsibility. In case she wins a seat in the parliament for the third time, she promises to keep supporting the Balkans.

“The Western Balkan issues have been an enormous challenge and I’m completely committed to dealing with these issues. Sometimes it’s very hard to defend the interests of the WB countries when it comes to the EU, and to understand both sides,” says Ms Fajon.

“During my next term, I’d like to see somewhat accelerated negotiations and greater progress of all countries, which means faster reforms and harmonization of the national legislation with the one of the EU. And also – resolving the open political issues,” underlines she.

According to her, it’s not a secret that the EU enlargement policy is not supported as it used to be. Having in mind the existing political trends when more European leaders pose new limitations, one cannot expect they would approve of further EU enlargement.

On 26 May, she expects not to wake up in Europe led by the extreme far-right politicians using various methods, even lies, and who don’t have right solutions to numerous problems.
