Game of Western Balkans starts in Montenegro

Dušan Janjić

President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, will have to stabilize relations with Podgorica, because that’s his most important address in the surroundings, maybe even the only place he can come back to, said political analyst from Belgrade, Dušan Janjić.

He thinks that in political terms, it is a strategic mistake that Vučić failed to develop relations with Montenegro.

“It’s a lot more difficult for him to come back to Sarajevo. To Zagreb too. What we know ever since from the period of the crisis in Yugoslavia is that Montenegro is the meeting point of Western Balkans. Anyone who wants to play “Western Balkans game” will have to come to Montenegro first. And if you are coming to Montenegro, you’d better be on good terms with it“, said Janjić.

Janjić says that relations between Podgorica and Belgrade are bad.

“Serbia joined the flow of pro-Russian policy and, allegedly, pro-Serbian policy in Montenegro. Those people said that they were Montenegrin people of Serbian origin, they never said they weren’t Montenegrins. Degree of ignorance about ethnic relations and their own nation is huge among Serbian leaders”, says Janjić.

Another great problem is NATO policy.

“NATO can’t break just because of one of its Members. They don’t understand the most basic thing. That they have become the factor that could endanger stability of NATO and its southern wing” ,says Janjić.

Tensions in the region mean announce internal and external changes.

“It’s evident that elections in many countries will take place in November. Chauvinism and populism are in now. Then there is total marginalization of the political elite of Balkans, which doesn’t understand new trends of global policy. Here I mean especially those who relate all their expectations to one or two men – Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin”, says Janjić.
