Global Peace Index puts Montenegro at 67th position

Institute for Economics and Peace puts Montenegro at 67th place out of total 163 counties on the Global Peace Index list.

Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. Other countries in top five are New Zealand, Portugal, Austria and Denmark. Bhutan has recorded the largest improvement of any country in the top 20, rising 43 places in the last 12 years. Afghanistan is now the least peaceful country in the world, replacing Syria, which is now the second least peaceful.

To calculate how peaceful a country is, the GPI looks at 22 different indicators. External conflicts, relations with neighboring countries, weapons import, violent protests, political instability were the indicators used for this year’s index.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) 2019 report finds that the average level of global peacefulness improved very slightly in the 2019 GPI. This is the first time the index has improved in five years. The average country score improved by -0.09 per cent, with 86 countries improving, and 76 recording deterioration. Over the last ten years, the average level of global peacefulness has deteriorated by 3.78%.

Four out of five regions in the world have become more peaceful during previous year. Russia and Eurasia have improved considerably. All three regions in America have recorded deterioration, especially Central America and the Caribbean.

Despite certain improvements, the world is now less peaceful than it was a decade ago, with average level of global peacefulness which has deteriorated. The fall in level of peacefulness was caused by a wide range of factors, including increased terrorist activities, fueling conflicts in the Middle East, growing regional tensions in Eastern Europe and North-East Asia and growing number of refugees.
