Government will not let mothers down

The Government of Montenegro could revise so-called law on mothers of three or more children by May, said Prime Minister Dusko Markovic. The Constitutional Court declared the law unconstitutional.

The Court ordered the government to regulate the legal status of about 20.000 women who took allowances in the next three months. The prime minister said the government had not received the decision yet.

“It is not right to speculate. We will not let down the expectations of the beneficiaries of the law that represented legal violence. Also, I will recommend new incentives. We hope that the law will be ready by May,” he said.

As a reminder, the Montenegrin Parliament adopted the Law on Amendments to the Law on Social and Child Protection in July last year by votes of the opposition MPs and some MPs for the ruling coalition (SDP, Bosniak Party and Andrija Popovic from LP).

The allowances, the paying of which began on 1 January this year, originally amounted €336 and €192. However, by the decision of the Government and the Parliament, they have been reduced to €264 and €144 respectively.

Some of the beneficiaries went on strike in front of the Parliament building from 2 to 26 March.

However, the Constitutional Court decided that the allowance reduction was in accordance with the highest legal act.
