Govt not interested in construction of HPP Buk-Bijela

Rijeka Tara

Montenegro plans to use potentials of its rivers but the govt won’t launch an initiative for construction of the Buk-Bijela hydroelectric power plant, the Ministry of Economy told CdM.

There’s a list of priority infrastructure projects in the energy fields and the topmost priority goes to the project ‘Hydropower generation and water management in the Drina, Piva, Tara, Ćehotina, Lim, Ibar and Morača river basins’, as their hydropower potential does not belong to Montenegro but to other regional countries as well.

“This is about a regional project and our intention is to monitor the hydropower potential of 5 rivers in order to see how to use them. Any construction of hydroelectric power plant on each one of them is absolutely excluded. On the contrary, this project seeks for optimal solution to use hydropower potential of basins at the same time respecting limitations imposed by the Declaration on Protection of the Tara River,” the Ministry of Economy explained.

The Ministry also mentioned that the support of the European Union (EU) would be of immense significance, which was one of the reasons this project was labeled as a topmost priority. The intention is to get support through grants and EU funds, such as the Western Balkans Investment Framework.

Media has already reported about the Tara River issue and many still believe the energy lobby hasn’t given up its plans to use the hydropower potentials of this river.
