Import of chicken infected with salmonella prevented

Thanks to Montenegrin inspectors, 27 tonnes of chicken drumsticks, 3,770kg of whole chickens and 690kg of mussels contaminated with salmonella have not reached the market.

According to the July report on the work of inspectorates of the Directorate for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Matters, seen by Dnevne Novine, out of all consignments intended for import, a total of 178 tonnes of food of animal and non-animal origin, as well as animal feed, was returned or destroyed.

Inspectors also prevented import of almost 2 tonnes of paprika (1,895kg) over registered 4.5 times higher level of the dimethoate or omethoate than allowed. Those are insecticides used for pest control.

For the same reason, more than 2,400kg of grapes was not allowed to reach the market. At the beginning of July, import of 638kg of cucumbers was prevented duet to almost twice higher presence of the substance Chlorpyrifos, which is used to control soil pests.

Due the presence of heavy metals, such as mercury, 8.611kg of swordfish was destroyed. Due to the presence of salmonella and Escherichia coli, 690kg of mussels were destroyed.

The report also shows that the presence of coccidiostatics in the 15,000kg of animal feed was not noted. The substance is used against protozoa that cause disease in animals.
