Lovcen in fire: Cetinje ‘suffocated’ by smoke

Wildfires have been sweeping the Lovcen mountain for days. The previous night was the hardest one. Today’s situation mostly depends on the wind. Since last week, Cetinje has been ‘suffocated’ by smoke.

All of them are making superhuman efforts to save Njegos’s mausoleum, tourist facilities including the Lovcen-Becici resort, adventure park, bungalows of the Lovcen National Park, and local people’s homes.

As CdM learns, the commander of the Cetinje Civil Protection and Rescue Service, Pedja Mostrokol, got sick during the night and he was hospitalised.

There is a lot of WW2 ammunition left in Lovcen, which causes problems to firefighters, since sporadic detonations occur.

Last night, the municipal emergency squad called on all citizens and organisations to help in extinguishing the fire in order to save the cultural and natural goods of Lovcen National Park.

“The municipal squad informs all citizens and volunteers who want to help in extinguishing the fire, that they must be aware of the high risk and that they must be adequately equipped if they decide to join us. Members of the Civil Rescue and Protection Service and the Army of Montenegro will take care of the volunteers,” Cetinje municipality stated.

The Cetinje newspaper reports that the fire season has lasted since the first days of July. After the first wave, during which the most difficult situation was in Katunska Nahija, at the part of Lovcen towards the Njegusi village new fires brooked in early August.

The competent services are working on removing faults on power transmission line Cetinje-Ivanova Korita caused by the fire. Therefore consumers in the Gornic, Paprati, Bjelosa, Duga Njiva, Presjeka, Bostur, Ivanova Korita, Kuk, Dolovi and Lovcen villages were without electricity supply.
