A man from Podgorica who promotes Balkan musical heritage across Europe

Goran Vratnica

Goran Vratnica from Podgorica has lived and worked in Belgium for more than two decades. He is an expert for South Slavic languages in the French Community of Belgium and President of the Association of Montenegrin-Belgian friendship “Montenegro”. He’s started being engaged in music from his early age. After leaving the country, he joined the ensemble led by the famous musician Branko Pavlovic, a member of the once very popular band “Sar e Roma”.

He has performed throughout Europe, representing ethno-repertoire from the Balkans, but with a particular sensibility for the Montenegrin folk songs, Dnevne Novine newspaper writes.

“The idea was born in Belgium, where I received an invitation to participate in the promotion of intercultural and inter-ethnic cooperation at the international level. Belgium has long recognised its importance and it maintains this form of communication as a means of combating divisions and prejudices,” says Vratnica.

“It was not easy, but it is a real challenge for an interpreter, linguist and polyglot… how to meet rich phonetic, rhythmic and other criteria?”

The whole project was finally named Music Walk across the Balkans.
