Marković, Priante: Montenegro is an example for the whole world

Montenegro is an example for the whole world of how tourism potentials should be exploited in a sustainable way, it was noted at the meeting between Montenegro’s Prime Minister, Duško Marković, and Director for Europe of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Alessandra Priante.

“We are strongly focused on tourism, with an emphasis on sustainable development. We want to preserve our resources for future generations, and through a series of activities, we wanted to reaffirm our commitment to the green economy. I would like to remind that we are the first non-EU country to adopt the Climate Change Law”, PM Marković said.

The Prime Minister also told that Montenegro’s tourism has been continuously growing, as every year, arrivals, as well as overnight stays and revenues are going up. According to preliminary data, 2.64 million tourists visited Montenegro last year, which is by around 440,000 tourists more compared to 2018, and represents the best result in the history of Montenegro’s tourism.

As for the revenues, PM Marković added, around €1.14 billion was collected from domestic and foreign arrivals or around €100 million compared to 2018.

The Prime Minister also underlined that the Government of Montenegro, apart from tourism, has been especially focused on agriculture, energy and strengthening of the overall infrastructure.

Ms Priante said she admired the Government’s understanding of the importance of tourism for the state and its economy. She emphasized that the World Tourism Organization, as a specialized agency of the United Nations, wishes to continue quality cooperation with the Government and the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, in further promotion of responsible and sustainable tourism.
