Medojević isn’t familiar with EU practice

Nebojša Medojević

Statement made by one of the leaders of Democratic Front (DF), Mr Nebojša Medojević, that an agreement according to which one country can allow police forces to enter its territory doesn’t exist anywhere in the world is not true. Such practice hasn’t been in force in the EU member states for so long.

Teams of Albanian police forces have recently been patrolling in the Montenegrin territory for days, which prompted Mr Medojević to say that such an agreement doesn’t exist anymore. He added that a wall should be erected between Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania in order to suppress crime.

“Crime can only be eliminated by more subtle methods, not by erecting walls. As far as the presence of police forces of other countries is concerned, such practice has existed in the EU for a long time”, said in a statement for CdM Mr Velimir Rakočević, criminologist and Professor in the Faculty of Law.

Times change and so does organization and international cooperation among police services.

“Internal police requirements are not what they used to be. The objective is to establish joint police forces which will be maintaining security not only among countries but also within the EU”, said Mr Rakočević.

Two days ago, patrols of Albanian police patrols were undertaking activities in the territory of Montenegro within their jurisdiction and in accordance with the agreement  between Montenegro and Albania. However, certain Serbian media and representatives of opposition parties took that opportunity to upset the public releasing sweeping statements only to cause panic.

“Such activities are related to maintenance, repair and renewal of border signs, in accordance with the agreements”, said the representatives of Police Department.

Agreement between the Government of Montenegro and Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania on renewal, repair and maintenance of pyramids and other border signs was signed on 6 November 2009.

“In compliance with that agreement, commissions of Montenegro and Albania jointly analyze the condition of border signs. These are their regular  activities”, said the representatives of police Department.

Montenegro-Albania border

State border with Albania was defined by Protocol on demarcation between Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians and Kingdom of Albania of 26 July 1926. After Montenegro regained its independence, it was necessary to reach an Agreement on border management, since three new countries were formed: Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia.

“Agreement on the border management with other neighboring countries doesn’t exist, as Montenegro only had part of the Albanian border”, said the representatives of the Ministry of Interior.

By making statements regarding the erection of a wall, Mr Medojević humiliated Albanian parties which supported his policy in the presidential elections in 2008. This was stated by the member of DPS Main Committee, Mr Nikola Gegaj and Mr Fatmir Đeka.
