Since August last year, Montenegrin police has identified higher  influx of migrants. Many of them don’t want to stay in Montenegro and, therefore, they aren’t charged for illegally crossing the border. However, there are those who crossed the border unlawfully and didn’t request international protection and police instigated misdemeanor procedures against them. Border police has the situation under control.

“This year, the police instigated procedures against 359 foreigners. They mostly came from Albania and requested international protection. In accordance with the Law on International and Temporary Protection of Foreigners they cannot be punished for illegal border crossing but they submit the request for asylum to the competent service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs”, say the representatives of the Police Department.

Those migrants who don’t request international protection will be charged. The misdemeanor procedure is followed by the procedure of bringing them back to their homeland , in accordance with the Law on Foreigners.

“Around 3.132 migrants were registered at the territory of Montenegro in the first eight months of this year. More than last year”, reports the Police Department.

The Government defined the Action Plan in case of mass migrant influx and refugees in transit. In addition, Operation team has been formed and it already had several meetings where they defined specific measures that authorities should undertake.

“Competent authorities of Montenegro  take measures in order to reduce the number of migrants. Patrols are constantly at borders”, reports the Police.

Five migrants from the ship “Diciotti” were allowed to enter Montenegro but they haven’t arrived yet.

“The Government of Montenegro rendered a Decision to accept five migrants from “Diciotti”. When they arrive, measures that fall under our competencies will be taken”, explain the representatives of Police Department.

Border Police of Montenegro prevented 51 illegal border crossings.
