Montenegro and Đukanović are the most important players in the region

Dušan Janjić

Political analyst and President of the Forum for Ethnic Relations, Dušan Janjić, says that a period of great responsibility is ahead of Western Balkans, because the European Union will weigh carefully what has been done and which of the given promises have been kept.

Speaking of the effects of the meeting in Berlin, organized by German Chancellor, Angela Merkel and French President, Emmanuel Macron, Mr Janjić pointed out that some very clear messages have been conveyed from Berlin. As he says, they are all unified by the request that regulations of relations between Serbia and Kosovo must not inflict damage to others in the region.

“One of the objectives of the meeting is finishing the story about changing the borders. Also, countries in our region shall assume the responsibility of the stability in the Balkans, not only the EU”, says Mr Janjić.

In that context, he stresses the role of Montenegro and its President, Milo Đukanović.

“Mr Đukanović has been invited to Berlin as an influential man, and as a President of NATO Member, country that has recognized Kosovo and country that conducts foreign policy that corresponds to that of the EU. I believe everybody knows  – EU accession doesn’t happen without NATO membership”, says Mr Janjić.

After the meeting with the leaders of WB countries, President Đukanović said that he had been repeatedly saying how important it is to meet the standards and implement reforms for EU membership.

“The meeting itself was precious. It represented phase in which two key states, Germany and France, will set a very important mark on further journey towards integration”, said the President.

Janjić said that these words reflected the importance of Montenegro in the entire process.

“Montenegro should be the place of the encounter of the leaders in the region, because it’s made greatest progress and is the most important player in the region. President Đukanović’s role is to encourage the leaders of WB countries to engage in dialogue, reconciliation and agreement. He can exert influence on everything and everybody, especially Belgrade. He can make Belgrade change its opinion about the integration process”, says Mr Janjić.

Effects of this meeting are great and important for Montenegro.

“Podgorica and President Đukanović have got the deserved place of the mediator among regional leaders and countries”, says Mr Janjić.

Until the next meeting, which is going to be held in Paris, WB countries are supposed to do a lot of work.
