Montenegro establishes more efficient system for citizens’ protection

When somebody mentions NATO, one usually thinks of a military component of the Alliance. However, NATO directs a great deal of its potentials to the protection and recovery from disasters, the activity that is usually neglected. This exercise is a chance to point out that NATO dimension. We will continue to devote maximum efforts to protect or citizens from different kinds of natural disasters, said Minister of Interior, Mr Mevludin Nuhodžić at the opening of field exercise NCIS MONTENEGRO 2019 which is taking place as part of NATO program Science for Peace and Security (SPS).

Minister said that this exercise was a chance for us to further improve regional cooperation and confirm stable neighborly relations and communication in the domain of protection and rescuing.

“I believe that this exercise is a proof that Directorate for Emergency Situations is a credible partner in the implementation of numerous projects financed by NATO”, pointed out Mr Nuhodžić.

He expressed gratitude to the office of SPS NATO program which earmarked funds for the implementation  of this project in Montenegro.

“What is particularly important is the fact that a new internet system, the so called  NICS system, will be used in Montenegro for the first time. It’s a system for management and coordination in rescue and protection activities. This software will be integrated with the existing national system and will help decision-makers render high-quality decisions in emergency situations with the use of images and video recordings”, stressed Mr Nuhodžić.

Mr Ejup Turmus, one of the managers of SPS program, expressed his satisfaction with the fact that Montenegro had recognized the importance of the improvement of capacities in emergency situations.

“This system will enable Montenegro to exchange information with other states at greater speed”, pointed out Mr Turmus.

He also highlighted the contribution of young researchers and scientists in Montenegro, who created mobile telephone app 112, enabling citizens and tourists to access all emergency services if necessary.

The topic of the field exercise which will be performed between 1 and 4 October in Podgorica and Danilovgrad is extinguishing fires in the open space and testing the state-of the art information technologies for coordination and managing in rescuing and protection activities.
