Montenegro generated enough renewable energy to power the whole country

From 24 May to 2 June 2019, Montenegro generated enough renewable electricity to power the whole country for is likely the first time, which means our country is among the few ones that generate all the electricity from domestic renewable sources, the Government of Montenegro announced.

During this period, when the Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in Pljevlja was out of service, around 82 million kWh of electricity was generated, while 75 million kWh of it was spent.

“The two leading Montenegro’s hydropower plants, Piva and Perućica, owned by the Electric Power Company of Montenegro, greatly contributed to this historical moment. New sources of energy – small hydropower plants and wind farms constructed over the past few years – played the main role in this process,” the Government said in a statement.

In addition, Krnovo wind farm whose wind turbines are set at the highest altitude in Europe and Možura wind farm produced 12 per cent of the energy spent in Montenegro over this same period.

A wind record was set on 28 May when wind farms produced electricity enough to meet even 28% of the total Montenegro’s electricity consumption.

“Our example shows that the Montenegrin commitment to meeting the international requirements provides concrete results,” noted the Montenegrin govt.
