Montenegro is the pearl of the Balkans, Buscardini

A man who made two documentaries about Montenegro (Budva, Cetinje) can’t wait to return to our country and see the remaining gems that, as he says, this country whose landscapes are breathtaking, has to offer. He tells his friends in Brussels that Montenegro is the pearl of the Balkans with amazing landscapes and kind and hospitable people.

He’s Antonio Buscardini, a tourism expert, journalist and man who will launch the global “Travel Tomorrow” platform on June 16th.

Mr Buscardini tells CdM how he experienced and fell in love with Montenegro.

“I had an enormous pleasure to visit Budva and Cetinje back in 2017 where I met generous and cordial people and rich cultural heritage. We made two documentaries for the international French television TV5 MONDE. We presented Budva as one of Europe’s main destinations. This documentary was broadcast intensively from 2017 to 2019, gathering more than 60 million viewers. The most successful scene was the one from Sveti Stefan. Not only because of its unquestionable beauty, but also because of its very passionate history and stories about the Paštrovići tribe,” Mr Buscardini says.

A breathtaking country

Buscardini simply has no dilemma – Montenegro combines a rich history, glamor from Budva and Kotor, breathtaking natural beauties and very kind people.

Let’s not forget about its fantastic gastronomy as well!

There is hope

When asked how he sees the situation with tourism in Montenegro due to the coronavirus crisis and whether the summer season can be saved, Mr Buscardini said that it’s clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has turned the world upside down.

“Tourism accounts for 20.8 per cent of Montenegro’s GDP. This is an important figure compared to the EU average of 11 per cent. The question is – how do we get out of this crisis as a society that has learned from its mistakes and difficult moments? How to reach the balance between emergency sustainability and economic recovery? Yes, I think the season might be saved, not only in Montenegro, but in Europe as a whole,” he was adamant.

What is going to change in tourism after the coronavirus pandemic?

“Now, more than ever, is the time to make critical changes for the sustainable future, including responsible tourism. We have seen that governments offered relief to companies affected by travel restrictions, at the same time stressing that things must change. Sustainable transport methods need to be figured out and applied as well. This crisis is an opportunity to highlight strategies for coordinated actions of all actors (producers, distributors, consumers, environmental agencies, etc.) in the value chain,” Mr Buscardini emphasizes.

On the Travel Tomorrow Platform

“We will launch Travel Tomorrow platform on 16 June, a global media focused on the travel experience and the power of different cultural stories. We are from Brussels, of both European and global spirit. In the current environment, we wish to provide up-to-date content on health and travel guidelines by the governments, as well as other relevant information on travel and tourism. We believe it’s important to restore trust, hope and strengthen solidarity among all peoples and cultures.“

What else is the goal?

“As a platform, we want to give the opportunity to all participants in the tourism industry who are affected by travel restrictions due to COVID-19 to speak. We mean on tour operators and wine producers, restaurant and cafe owners, airlines, hotels, museums, cultural and historical sites … We want to know how they were affected by the pandemic, how they react to it and what they are going to do differently in the future. And last but not least, we want our audience to dream,” Buscardini explains.

And in the end, he says, they want to stimulate their senses and awaken their imagination.
