Montenegro set to receive record tourism investment

Montenegro has never in its history welcomed 400,000 tourists and had a million and a half overnights in a year, as it was the case in 2019.

In an interview for Dnevne Novine daily, a State Secretary in the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, MORiT, Mr Damir Davidović, explains that the number of registered guest has been estimated at around 2.6 million, while the overnights accounted for around 14.5 million.

“In 2019, we expect a 9.5 million euro revenues from a city tax, which is a million and a half more compared to last year and 50% higher compared to 2016. The tourist tax and membership fee in the first 11 months were charged in the amount of 1.8 million euro. We expect total tourism revenue from foreign and domestic guests to exceed 1.1 billion euro, which will be a massive increase of almost 10% compared to 2018,” he added.

When it comes to the accommodation capacities, there are about 25,000 beds now, that is, 56% of beds are in four or five-star hotels, an outcome of which we should be proud of. Mr Davidović also reminded that Europe’s first One&Only resort and the new Ritz Carlton hotels were going to be open in Montenegro.

He continued: “The Ski Resorts of Montenegro show a strong commitment of the Government in the creation of a new generator of tourism economy, new jobs and the overall improvement of citizens’ standards in the north. The opening of the first motorway section is a key infrastructure assumption that all projects will use their full potential no matter whether they have been realized from the capital budget or private investment. This creates an opportunity for local entrepreneurs and companies to find their place and new sources of revenues.”

Mr Davidović expects this year will bring good results as well and that the announced projects “are part of the process that should lead to the full maturity of Montenegro as a tourism destination and create conditions for reaching its full potential. “
