Montenegro takes measures to prevent migrant influx

In an interview with Austrian national public service broadcaster (ORF), Montenegrin Prime Minister, Duško Marković, said that Montenegro has been taking numerous measures in order to decrease migrant arrivals into the European Union (EU).

“The situation is becoming serious as the number of illegal immigrants coming to Montenegro from Greece keeps growing. In the first 5 months of 2018 we recorded around 1,500 illegal crossings, which represents considerable increase compared to the situation in last year. I believe we’re capable of solving this issue by joint efforts in our region. Montenegro has a special plan for this issue, i.e. we established the operative team with the task to find a workable solution,” said PM Marković.

He also reminded that two days ago Montenegro’s interior minister, Mevludin Nuhodžić agreed to strengthen joint border controls with his Albanian counterpart Fatmir Xhafaj in order to tighten borders. The two countries also noted that better cooperation with the Frontex is needed, as well as sharing information and risk analyses.

Montenegro owns the Center for Migrants and there are separate locations for refugee reception in case our country will need to face influx of migrants, concluded PM Marković.
