Nimanbegu: I fully back agreement between Democrats and DPS

Genci Nimanbegu

I back the agreement between the Democrats and the Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, reached thanks to the EU. I myself was ready to assist in reaching it. That is why I voted in favor of it. But, after the parliamentary debate, I’m not an optimist anymore as it’s difficult to figure out whether there’s a greater misunderstanding between the opposition and the government or within the opposition itself, Mr Genci Nimanbegu, Monteengro’s deputy parliament speaker and Forca MP, told in an interview with Pobjeda, a daily.

“I sincerely hope that a step forward has been made. I fully back the agreement because both parties have a positive attitude towards the national communities in Montenegro, contrary to some other parties that present the leaders of the minority parties as their enemies. We cannot make progress with those who are proud of actions of Radovan Karadžić and other people convicted of genocide and war crimes,” noted Mr Nimanbegu, commenting on the agreement reached between the Democrats and DPS (agreement means the Democrats are going to take part in the Committee for Further Reform of Electoral and Other Legislation).

The subgroups of the Committee had already prepared some legal proposals without the opposition and meanwhile, the Democrats announced their involvement in the Committee. When asked to say whether this means the whole process will be returned to the very beginning, Mr Nimanbegu said: “We have to change the whole electoral legislation. First, we must take a look at the proposed legal solutions and then estimate their quality. The subgroups were working without the opposition. They told us they had come to some really good solutions.”

On the opposition’s request to set up the transitional government, he said: “In my opinion, there must be some alternative to their request. And what if there’s no alternative?! In that case, the opposition needs to seek for it and it’s up to the government to accept or deny it.”
