No warrant until court’s decision is received

Arrest warrant against Svetozar Marovic, former high-ranking DPS official, will be issued only after the defendant and his lawyers receive the High Court decision on rejecting the appeal to postpone serving 10 month prison sentence because of Marovic’s poor health, Dnevne Novine newspaper writes.

On 27 April, the High Court in Podgorica rejected the appeal of Marovic’s defence attorneys Zdravko Begovic from Podgorica and Vladimir Marinkov from Belgrade, which were filed against the decision of the president of the Basic Court in Kotor not to approve his request to postpone serving the prison sentence.

Marovic made a plea bargain with the Special State Prosecutor’s Office (SDT) according to which he agreed to spend three years and ten months in prison, return more than €1m to the state and pay €100,000 fine.

He has not paid €100 000 fine yet, although he announced he would do that in order to avoid extending his prison sentence. The deadline for paying the fine has expired, but his prison sentence has not been extended for a year yet.

“The decision on rejecting Svetozar Marovic’s defence attorneys’ appeal shall be delivered to the convicted Marovic and his lawyers first and then the actions stipulated by the law on enforcement of prison sentences, fines and security measures,” the president of the Kotor Basic Court Branko Vukcevic said.

Lawyer Begovic told DN that neither he nor his client had received the High Court’s decision.

“We have not received any decision yet. Also, Marovic has not paid €100,000 fine because of the medical treatment in Belgrade he is currently under,” said Begovic.
