Nord Pool to enter the Montenegrin power exchange

The Montenegrin Power Exchange company (BELEN) has selected Nord Pool from Norway, one of the European leaders in power trading, as its strategic partner, and the intention is to extend cooperation so that Nord Pool becomes a shareholder of BELEN.

BELEN clarified for Dnevne Novine daily that the selection of a strategic partner was a precondition for the national power trading that is due to happen in the beginning of 2020. Nord Pool was chosen via an open competition.

“The first competitive Montenegrin day-ahead power market is expected to start as of 2020. BELEN and Nord Pool, chosen after an open competition, have committed themselves to the development of a transparent and efficient power market, enabling Montenegro to couple with neighboring countries according to the European Internal Energy Market (IEM) standards,” BELEN said.

The cooperation, BELEN added, will include support for establishing processes and procedures required to operate a national day-ahead market in Montenegro, market coupling with the neighboring countries and day-ahead clearing and settlement processes.
