According to the latest estimates of security services in Montenegro, currently there are 11 crime gangs operating in Montenegro and the trafficking of cocaine remains their ‘biggest business’.

“From 2010 until today and since three organized crime risk assessments have been developed, the total number of crime gangs decreased by around 70% (i.e. 68.6%). Police actions targeted at organized crime greatly contributed to this statistics,” the National Police told Dan daily.

The police also mentioned that the number of crime gangs in 2013 was twice as many as is now and explained that based on published analyses, criminal gangs from the coast of Montenegro are the most dangerous organized crime groups. Currently, investigative bodies in Montenegro mostly deal with the Kavac and Škaljari clans from the coastal resort town of Kotor. According to the police data, their biggest business is the cocaine trafficking. The clans used to operate together, but a group of its members stole around 200 kg of cocaine after which the best-known mafia war in the Balkans was made.

Thanks to the close collaboration with the prosecutor’s office, police and law enforcement agencies in the region, Montenegrin police continue to implement intensive actions on preventing organized crime, which has given measurable and positive results so far.
