Parolin: Montenegro’s best example of unity in diversity

On the road to the European Union (EU), the Western Balkan countries should strive to improve values which unite them, and abandon everything that used to lead them to divisions, says the Vatican’s second most senior official, the secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, in an interview for Pobjeda daily.

“The Vatican is watching the Western Balkans and its EU integration closely. I believe that the EU integration represents a chance for peace and stability, as well as for liberation from the past. On other side, the EU accession itself must be projected as continuous contribution to the integration process. This is why the EU itself has to respect your history and sensibility,” said secretary of state, Pietro Parolin.

On Wednesday (June 27th), Cardinal Parolin will make his first visit to Montenegro, when he will be meeting Montenegro’s prime minister, Duško Marković, and other Montenegrin officials as well.

People say Cardinal Parolin is one of the most influential figures in the Vatican, possessing over 30 years of working experience in diplomacy in the Vatican. He’s an expert in issues related to the Near East, and he greatly contributed to open dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians.

He was appointed Vatican secretary of state in October 2013.
