Plan B: If the region closes borders, Montenegro will have to do it too

Finance Minister, Radoje Zugic, told reporters the Government used this time to discuss announcements that Montenegro could become part of a transit route for migrants.

“It was agreed that authorized bodies will prepare, each from its set of duties, plans and proposals to be reviewed at the next session of the Government, where concrete conclusions could be made”, said Zugic.

Pobjeda daily learned that the Government discussed the possibility of closing Montenegro’s border to refugees, in the event that other regional countries do.

At the end of last year, thirty kilometers from Podgorica, near the border with Albania and the Božaj border crossing, in the village of Krenza, Montenegro prepared a place for the reception of refugees which would transit through its territory on their way to EU countries.

Austrian Foreign Minister, Sebastian Kurz, said Wednesday that he does not exclude the possibility that Montenegro could become part of the transitional route for migrants should Austria close its borders. He said that if Austria and some countries in the region close their borders to migrants, it could have consequences for the entire region.
“There is a possibility that countries which so far haven’t been affected now become part of the transit route”, said Kurtz.

According to him, Montenegro is not on the route, but the possibility that it might become part of it is not completely excluded. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Montenegro, Igor Luksic, said that Montenegro, if it comes to closing the borders to migrants, will synchronize its policy with the countries of the region and the European Union.

He said Montenegro already has an action plan for certain situations and that the measures taken by the State have been prepared in a quality manner.
