Excavators on Ada: Bojana river mouth to be unblocked

Works on unblocking the mouth of Bojana river have began this morning. After more than a hundred years it has been blocked due to weather conditions and a lower water supply from the Drim river, as well as certain neglect of the authorities.

Many people are worried because such a thing has never happened since the Ada was created in 1882. Obviously, many years of negligence, pollution and devastation led to this environmental incident.

Environmental activists, fishermen and river lovers see this as a natural disaster and “a small earthquake for their souls”.

The flow of the river has been stopped. The area looks like a swamp in which sewage and other waste from more than 570 houses and restaurants are being disposed.

Representatives of the Ulcinj Municipality and the Water Directorate had an urgent meeting yesterday. They agreed that excavators should unblock the channel.

This problem has existed for decades. In 2010 the Water Administration made a project for regulating the Bojana River in its mouth zone. For that purpose a Belgrade-based company was hired and famous professor Sava Petkovic was the expert consultant on the project. The tender for the works was called in 2015, but there were no bids.

Once the channel is unblocked, relevant experts will suggest the best option to solve the issue.

In the coming days, the works will be focused on removing the sand blockage. At the end of the week, opening the channel is to follow, which again could endanger numerous houses. That’s why a project is needed both for the channel and for the mouth.
