Prelević: One cannot buy social peace by electricity prices

Recent announcement of an increase in electricity prices has been totally legit and legal, Branislav Prelević, the president of the Board of the Energy Regulatory Agency (RAE), told in an interview with the weekend edition of Dnevne Novine daily, adding that one cannot buy social peace by the electricity.

“The 2016 Law assumes that the part of the electricity bill which refers to the electricity itself will be defined on the free market. This is not just one of the provisions from this Law, that’s its main aim and finally our obligation in the process of aligning the national legislation with the EU regulations,” said Mr Prelević.

It’s completely different thing if someone doesn’t like the market principle for pricing the electricity, but we once we decided to become the EU member state, we accepted to follow its system of values in every aspect of life defined by laws, rules and codes.

“As for the energy sector, the EU has defined it via several ‘energy packages’ and our legislative and regulatory framework has been completely aligned with the EU’s 3rd energy package. By the way, I totally agree with the EU’s commitment to regulate the matters within the energy sector on the basis of the market principles, as all the other solutions would lead us to the state’s interference, which have proved to be failure in this area,” Mr Prelević added.
