Religious processions with faith in politics

Andrijevica

Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral is trying to explain that religious processions haven’t got political background, but it’s not very successful in its attempts.

Surprisingly enough, leaders of the Democratic Front (DF) have been criticizing Metropolitanate and especially Mr Gojko Perović, rector of the Theology University in Cetinje.

“God gave people strength to succeed no matter the what. Many people come to protests because they were already dissatisfied, willing to protest against other topics”, Mr Perović said.

Commenting on the government’s accusations that religious processions have other background, Mr Perović says that processions will end if the law is withdrawn.

“The topic is political but it has no party tone, it’s not the topic discussed on party tribunes. That’s nonsense”, Mr Perović said.

He pointed out that the church led the processions.

“Politicians and opposition leaders, I’m begging you, do not decide upon processions. Be with us, but don’t call on anything, don’t suggest. This is led by the church”, Mr Perović said.

Reaction of Mr Nebojša Medojević proves that the topic is political indeed.

“This fight is complex, dangerous and very difficult. And everybody must do their work. The church, and we. We don’t teach them and instruct them, so Mr Perović could also lower his voice a little and concentrate on DPS because DPS is the enemy of the Church”, Mr Medojević commented on social media.

Political analyst Srđa Vukadinović claims that religious processions have political character and the background.

“The Metropolitanate is trying to unite the opposition, but Democrats are avoiding that. Another important event processions are used for is the 2021 census, which is supposed to show how many Serbs there are. And that’s not all. Politicians supporting processions will launch the issue of granting citizenship to people who were born in Montenegro or whose parents were born here”, Mr Vukadinović says.

Dialogue between the Government and the Metropolitanate has started and it will be held at expert level in future. The very beginning of the talks has eased tensions a little. If no solution is reached, there will be elections.
