In an interview with Pobjeda daily, Miro Kovač, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Croatian Parliament and former diplomat in chief, told all the open bilateral issues in the Western Balkans must be resolved as the EU member states won’t approve closing the negotiation chapters without it.
“Regardless of the fact Croatia is going to preside over the European Union in 2020, it is still strongly committed to maintaining the European perspective of Montenegro and all the other countries of the Western Balkans and continuation of the enlargement process as well,” Mr Kovač said.
Montenegro and Croatia cherish friendly relations, which was not so easy to achieve, according to him.
As for the region, there was less space for instability and uncertainty, he added, stating that 50% of former Yugoslavia already joined NATO. “Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo still haven’t joined NATO, but North Macedonia is steadily moving forward. I believe the instability in the region will decrease and the EU membership will be the next phase.”
